Nestled in the Newtown’s leafy Skene Street, Gold Diggers Arms may well be ‘the last of the true neighbourhood pubs’ in Geelong. In time honoured tradition the ‘Diggers’ has become the local for many, with their next generations following suit and making it their local of choice too. It all began for the Gold Diggers Arms in 1854 when William Lindsay was granted licence to the establishment. The population of Geelong was just over 20,000 people. Now, 150 years later, Newtown is an integral part of Geelong with sporting clubs, schools and shops and Geelong’s population has swelled to over 140,000 people.. It is one of the great pleasures of pub going, that every so often you find a pub that is as near perfection as possible. Perfection is of course subjective, which is why it’s so important that pubs are as individual as their customers. Finding a pub that ticks all your boxes is worth shouting about, and that is what we will be striving to achieve. In moving forward to the future of the Diggers we want to continue finding the things that make the perfect pub. In 1946 George Orwell wrote about his perfect pub in the London Evening Standard. He listed the attributes which made his perfect pub, amongst them; open fires, friendly bar staff, good food, a pleasant beer garden and the availability of cigarettes and his favourite tipple. However, what appealed to George most was the atmosphere... ‘that indefinable quality that cannot be contrived, manufactured or bought’. It is our vision that no matter what time of day you visit the Diggers, it always has that atmosphere of home…. Diggers will be a place where friends and family share a drink, a laugh, enjoy some great food and create some great memories. Diggers unveiled its new look public bar, saloon bar and dining room in 2010. There is also a brand new room upstairs, aptly named The Room Upstairs, perfect for private dining for groups of 20 or stand up for 50 people.
